Fires in the Heather

Film poster titled “Fires in the Heather” featuring a cyclist on moorland heather with distant hills and a soft, hazy figure in the background.
LOGLINE:
On the eve of her lifetime achievement award, an 84-year-old Scottish cycling icon shares a fantastical tale of her solo journey across the Highlands, guided by mythical creatures. But are the captivated schoolchildren hearing an inspiring legend, or a mother's poetic elegy for her lost children?
SHORT SYNOPSIS:

This is the story of Mavis Paterson who at age 84 cycles alone across Scotland, having lost her three adult children. What begins as a means of survival becomes a way of life: long-distance rides undertaken in solitude, raising funds for charity, earning medals, and quietly inspiring generations who encounter her on the road or learn her story.

As Mavis moves through Scotland’s elemental landscapes, figures from Scottish folklore appear along her journey. These encounters serve as emotional signpost, and gradually the physical journey becomes an internal one of remembrance and healing. Mavis learns to carry her grief forward through movement and landscape, as myth transforms loss into purpose, and solitude into quiet triumph.

GENRE & TONE

This is a luminous story of healing and self-discovery — dramatic, uplifting, and touched with a gentle magic. A solitary quest unfolds as she pedals through towering mountain passes, each climb a rite of passage that transforms the weight of memory into newfound strength. Moments of ache and shadow are balanced by bursts of light and wonder, as the landscape itself seems to whisper hope and guide her toward renewal.

The mythology is subtle and woven into the land, surfacing in Mavis’s most solitary moments on the road. Drawn from Scottish folklore, it appears briefly and purposefully — playful, ethereal visitations that feel spiritual rather than literal. At times a wolf will speak to her in a startling, intimate exchange; a hazy, cloudlike giant will settle among the peaks, a mournful, slow presence that shifts the skyline; a cloaked, spiritual guide will materialize at the edge of a glen. These moments read as hallucinatory — quiet, elemental and solitary — then recede once their story has been told. These magical entities represent each of lost her children, sent to guide through her perilous journey.
