Ohwa Film Casting Call
WORKING TITLE:
'Mavis' - Fires in the Heather

ROLE NAME
ROLE DESCRIPTION
Female, Scottish, 55–75 years. Athletic build and movement. Dry, wry sense of humour layered over a warm, maternal core — equal parts drama and light comedy. Must convey a quietly strong, nurturing presence with quick comic timing. Note: role inspired by Mavis, an 86-year-old record‑breaking cyclist.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Confident riding of a road bike on open roads around Edinburgh.
SYPNOPSIS
On a sunlit Highland road, MAVIS PATERSON (80) pedals with surprising power—wearing a regal pink evening gown and a white helmet—cutting an unforgettable figure as she coasts toward Edinburgh. Along the way she breezes past a pro cyclist, dodges a pothole, and takes a gentle tumble into the verge. DECLAN (50s), a gruff, big-set transit driver, stops and fusses over her; his awkward kindness wins her trust and a short ride into the city.
At a busy bike shop, JANE (30s), an enthusiastic mechanic and social-media-savvy assistant, fusses over Mavis and fits her with a bright red helmet. Mavis, warm and self-possessed, humbly endures the attention—photos, compliments, and gentle teasing—revealing a woman celebrated in the papers for record-breaking rides and million-pound charity efforts. Moments alone by the river, Mavis releases a small envelope into the current—an intimate, tender ritual—before heading on to the evening’s event at Edinburgh Castle.
As Mavis rides away into the hills, a ghostly, protective presence watches her go, leaving questions about the origins of her courage and the quiet forces that have accompanied her journey.
