LOGLINE:
A young man arrives in Milan for a job his family promised, only to find no work and a lack of native language skills. Stranded, he must find his footing in a foreign city, fall for a charming local woman, and navigate a family feud that draws him into the dangerous world of the mafia.
SHORT SYNOPSIS:

The story revolves around Sean, a young Brit in his early twenties who decides to move to Milan for work. He is educated but not wordly, and doesn’t speak Italian. He arrives but there is no work so his first challenge will be to find paid work.  In this pursuit he is accompanied by Adam a friend from England.  Finding a job is only one challenge of course. He makes friends sometimes with the wrong people. He is adaptable and learns quickly how to survive – albeit with some moral compromise. Love appears and retreats – he is surrounded by temptation.

A local couple take him under the wing, and he finds his footing. But sinister forces are ever present and a hapless Sean finds himself the subject of a frame-up, and goes to court.  All is resolved of course in this comic tale of self discovery, that ends with a wedding – and a call to go home for work in England.

GENRE & TONE

The tone for the story is one of self-deprecating humour laced with wry observations about the locals and the relationship with the Mafia and the police. The Mafia are present but not an overt threat. The Police are somewhat hapless in their own way. Humour abounds, but no one is ridiculed. It is a generous portrait of humanity in a bustling metropolis, one of Italy’s major modern centres, still including traces of the old ways.

Themes:
– Fish out of water and culture shock
– Self discovery
– The value of friendship and family
– Wry expatriate comedy
